Ask an Android phone that today and Gemini writes you an answer. Ask it a month ago and Assistant went and found you a result.
Same button. Different job. From 4 September 2026, Google is removing Assistant from Android and replacing it with Gemini — and once the change reaches your device, there's no switching back.
What is actually changing?
Google has been signalling this since March 2025, when it said it was "upgrading more users on mobile devices from Google Assistant to Gemini" and that "the classic Google Assistant will no longer be accessible on most mobile devices." September is when that finishes.
The removal covers Android phones and tablets, paired Wear OS watches and headphones, and cars using phone-projected Android Auto. Cars with Google built-in keep Assistant for now. As 9to5Google reported from Google's own emails to users, once availability is removed you can no longer use or switch back to Assistant. There's no toggle.
Why does this matter for getting found?
Assistant matched your words to a result and handed you a list. Gemini composes an answer.
That matters, because spoken questions were always the most commercially loaded ones. Nobody says "commercial air conditioning installation Manchester" out loud — they ask it the way the question at the top of this page is asked. That's a buying question, and it now returns a written answer rather than a page of options to choose between.
How much traffic do AI answers actually take?
Be careful with anyone quoting hard numbers on assistant answers — that data isn't public yet. The nearest solid evidence is Google's own search results. Pew Research Center tracked 68,879 searches from 900 US adults: when an AI summary appeared, people clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits, against 15% when there was no summary. Clicks on the links inside the summary itself: 1%.
For scale, Google says the Gemini app passed one billion monthly users in August 2026, "the fastest-growing product in Google's history." From this month it's the default assistant on Android as well.
None of that means search is finished. It means ranking and being cited have come apart. You can sit fifth and be the source an answer is built from, or sit first and be skipped.
What should you do about it?
Four things worth doing this quarter:
- Answer the questions people ask out loud. Use their actual phrasing, and put the answer in the first two sentences. Extractable beats clever.
- Make your facts agree everywhere. Hours, service areas, coverage, pricing. If your site, your Google Business Profile and your listings contradict each other, a model has no reason to trust any of them.
- Mark it up. Structured data won't rank you, but it makes your facts legible to the systems now doing the answering.
- Change what you watch. If answers absorb clicks, sessions will understate demand. Track branded search, direct traffic and enquiry quality alongside organic sessions, or you'll read a real problem into a reporting artefact.
Earning the answer rather than just the ranking is what our SEO work is now built around.

Not everywhere. It's being removed from phones, tablets, paired watches and headphones, and phone-projected Android Auto, rolling out over several weeks from 4 September 2026. Cars with Google built-in keep it for now.
No — it changes what winning looks like. The technical foundations, clear content and trustworthy signals that earned rankings are the same things that get a business cited in an AI answer. What changes is that the click is no longer guaranteed to follow.
Start by asking the assistants your customers' real questions and noting who gets named. Then watch branded search and direct traffic over time — if visibility is working without clicks, that's usually where it shows up first.
Assistant looked things up. Gemini answers. Your job now is making sure it answers with you.

AEO, GEO, LLMO, AIO: the alphabet soup of AI search, explained
On a single sales call you'll hear four acronyms for the same thing. One person says AEO, the consultant says GEO, the board deck says LLMO, and a vendor emails about AIO. Everyone nods. Nobody's sure they mean the same thing. They mostly do.
